Hair Color Chemistry: Key Components

1. Colorants

These are the pigments that create visible color in the hair. Two main types are used:

• Oxidative Colorants (Permanent/Semi-Permanent)

• Made of small, colorless dye precursors.

• They penetrate the hair shaft and react with an oxidizer (usually hydrogen peroxide) to form larger, colored dye molecules.

• Provide permanent results with deeper penetration and longer-lasting tones.

• Direct Colorants (Non-Oxidative/Vegetable Dyes)

• Pre-formed pigments that do not require peroxide.

• They sit on or just inside the cuticle.

• Common in temporary, demi-permanent, or conditioning colors.

• Fade faster but are gentler on the hair.

2. Developers (Oxidizing Agents)

• Contain hydrogen peroxide at different concentrations (commonly 3% to 12%, or 10- to 40-volume).

• Functions:

• Oxidizes dye precursors to form permanent color.

• Lightens natural melanin in hair when higher volumes are used.

• Controls the level of lift and deposit (low volume = deposit, high volume = lift).

3. Other Additives

These vary widely across brands and are often the “signature difference” in formulations.

• pH Adjusters (ammonia, MEA): Open the cuticle and optimize dye reaction.

• Surfactants/Emulsifiers: Keep the mixture smooth and spreadable.

• Conditioners & Silicones: Protect the hair and improve feel post-color.

• Thickeners: Control viscosity for better application (creams vs. gels vs. liquids).

• Botanical Extracts & Oils: Marketed for conditioning, shine, or scalp comfort.

• Stabilizers & Preservatives: Extend shelf life and product stability.

4. Regulation & Safety

• In the U.S., the FDA oversees ingredients to ensure products meet safety standards.

• In the E.U., the European Commission regulates hair dyes more strictly, sometimes banning or limiting certain oxidative intermediates.

• Manufacturers must list ingredients, perform safety testing, and comply with regional cosmetic laws.

Clients & Professionals:

While all permanent color systems use oxidative dyes + peroxide, the difference lies in the supporting chemistry — the base, conditioning system, and additives. That’s why some brands feel gentler, have more shine, or fade differently.
